After following her love to Water Deep, Gnyx and Shardon find their heads full of dreams and their coin purses empty. Gnyx took a job at a local jeweler, sweeping floors and running errands. She was also to learn the trade of jewerly making. Shardon found a job with the Carpenter’s Guild.
Things were going great for the young couple in love. They both had well-paying jobs and lived in a small rented house. Gnyx made friends with a few co-workers and the neighbors. Shardon made friends with the men who worked with him. Gnyx thought Shardon’s friends were rude and pompous. She feared they would lead him down a path of deception and destruction.
Gnyx’s suspicions regarding Shardon’s friends were well-founded. He started staying out late and coming home drunk. He became very secretive about his days at work and even more secretive about his evenings with his friends.
One night, fearing the worst, Gnyx followed Shardon from work to the tavern. He met with his friends and as a group they left. Gynx, even mor curious, continued to follow them. She followed through alleyways and side streets. They stopped at a store front. Her store front – the happy little jewelry shop where she’d spent months learning a new trade. She thought about the Shop Owner’s eyes lighting up when he spoke of rare gems and stones, about how his devoted wife brought them lunch everyday. She thought about how much she enjoyed working there.
A shatter of glass startled Gnyx from her thoughts. She watched as, one by one, they entered the shop. Her curiousity peaked, she moved forward to the doorway. She stood still observing what was happening. Unknowingly, she made her way to the middle of the shop. She tried to speak, but could not form the words.
As Shardon turned to leave, his hands and pockets full of loot, he saw Gnyx with a look of horrid shock on her face. Everyone in the shop stopped moving – no one said anything, nothing stirred. Shardon looked at Gnyx shamefully and started to walk to her but the loud shrill of a whistle broke his stride. His friends scattered in every direction. Gnyx looked over her shoulder to see a Watchman running toward the shop. When she turned to Shardon, he was gone.
Gnyx was arrested and taken to the Town Magistrate. She tried to explain why she was at the shop, stating that it was Shardon’s friends that got them into this mess. Looking at the stern expression of the Magistrate, she realized it was no use. His mind was made up.
She sat alone in a cold room, feeling herself surrender. Shardon had abandoned her. Still, she watched the door, desperately hoping to see Shardon come to her rescue. After what seemed like an eternity, the door creaked open. Gnyx sat up straight and leaned forward, she slumped back down when the Watchman entered the room.
In an angry tone, the Watchman said, “The Magistrate has an offer for you.”
Gnyx listened intently and uncertain of what her future held if she refused she agreed to the Magistrates terms.
She was to leave her life behind. She was to learn the ways of thieves, join their guilds, earn their confidence. She was to become an informant.
